The long-awaited Palo Pinto Mountains State Park is set to open on Sunday, March 1st.  The 4,871- acre park, located near Strawn, will be the first state park to open in North Texas in 25 years.

Governor Abbott’s office said that this will be more of a “soft opening” with a more formal grand opening planned for later this spring.   Crews are still putting the final touches on the park which will feature more than 16 miles of trails and the 90- acre Tucker Lake for fishing, swimming and kayaking.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department purchased the land in 2011, and the park was expected to open in 2023. Construction delays pushed the opening back to now.
