Cameron Gibson, a senior at Granbury High School, was the winner of a 2017 Nissan Sentra for a “perfect attendance” contest for the 2018-19 school year.  The car was provided courtesy of Granbury Nissan, and the final event was held on May 17, 2019, at Pirate Stadium.

The competition was announced last September at a high school pep rally.  Students strived all year long to earn tickets for the eventual drawing of ten finalists.  Distributed for perfect attendance while enrolled for the entire six weeks grading period, tickets were based on the following system:

  • one ticket each six week grading period with perfect attendance
  • five extra tickets each semester with perfect attendance
  • ten extra tickets for the whole school year with perfect attendance

At the giveaway event, ten students took their turn selecting a key that might start the vehicle.  Gibson was the fourth person to try.

Gibson will get the car along with tax, title, and license paid by the program.

Ross estimated that almost 1,300 students received at least one ticket for the drawing, and 57 students had perfect attendance all year and qualified for the maximum number of tickets.

Granbury Nissan teamed up with Strive to Drive TX in an all-out effort to educate students in Granbury ISD and their parents on the importance of being in class, as attendance has a direct effect on academic performance. Data from the Bureau of Educational Research in Illinois shows that consistent school attendance is directly linked to positive behavior, increased participation in extracurricular activities, higher grades and higher overall educational outcomes.

The vehicle, which is currently wrapped in bright green and features the Texas G logo, was featured at school events throughout the year, according to GHS principal Jeremy Ross.

This is the second year of the program at GHS.  Last May, then-freshman Lauren Wilde was the grand prizewinner.
